The design proposal is aimed at determining the optimal conditions for the recovery and maximum enhancement of the historical building heritage of the old city, in the thematic sphere of new residentiality, describing a new spatial-social form of living, which makes public space the backbone of the transformation, defining greater permeability and accessibility, in which the recovery of the public dimension of urban space, defines a project of social innovation.
The architectural limit of the building typology, composed of minimal private spaces, is overcome with shared services that constitute a natural extension of the private residence, respecting the genius loci through the centrality and quality of public space.
Social innovation and urban regeneration in Taranto’s Old City through collective residential spaces.
The Old City of Taranto, for its important history, physical connotation and environmental peculiarities, imagined in a network system with the territory “behind” and the entire Ionian arc, can become, through a strong action of contrast to the current generalized degradation, a great attractor of social, cultural, economic as well as tourist character, with the obvious benefits for the entire community.
The proposal should be accompanied by a model of participation that is progressively articulated by parts and activities, which has already been successfully tested in other realities.
The model aims to promote the active role of residents in the choices and management of the initiative, which necessarily, as already mentioned, must be shared and supported by the residents themselves, who, must glimpse not only the general interest of the community but the personal opportunity to activate forms of collaboration and work that could also be resources at the basis of a tourism development program, based on the dissemination of the culture of welcoming and sharing.
Through Co-housing, it is intended to activate “light” forms of collaboration with residents that contribute to the diversification of services offered, making the housing system more effective and more flexible, services that at the same time can be integrated to a tourism system.
Landform
The proposed housing model is that of the “extended house,” inferred from the physical structure of the building types that make up the subdivision, composed mainly of one- and two-room housing units, often “tower houses” with individual rooms distributed on two or more levels.
The limitation of the size of dwellings has led to a reflection for the development of a different way of living based on minimal private spaces and shared services.
This type of infrastructuring promotes a project of social innovation, where forms of COLLECTIVITY renew the quality of residential space and public space, where public space is no longer limited to urban space but also includes residential space.
The strategies proposed and adopted are an attempt to suggest a field of possible actions to redefine the quality of the existing through precise architectural interventions in the critical areas of the Old Town, in order to promote the development of new forms of permanent (co-housing) and temporary (albergo diffuso) living, and equip the historical fabric with new social and cultural “infrastructure” capable of accelerating the process of urban regeneration in nuce.
Through the implementation of different strategic projects – Un-homing, Un-roofing, Re-use, Re-plugging, Un-grounding – the rethinking of urban regeneration policy is proposed through a great attention to the aspects of environmental and economic sustainability for the city of Taranto, starting from its beating heart, the Old City.
