The design of the new school complex fits harmoniously into the context of the town of San Marzano sul Sarno (Sa). The proposed design idea considers and develops two main ideas: one sees the new school as a reinterpretation of the landscape and agricultural fields surrounding the inter-wind site in Piazza Amendola, re-proposing the greenery of the fields and plots in the roofing of the school facility; the other finds inspiration in the traditional courtyard house in the traditional development of the building, where the courtyard is identified by the spaces used for distribution as agora and corridors.
Since social development is seen as an integral part of cognitive development, space is designed and arranged to facilitate meeting and doing together; space tends to ensure that each pupil taken individually and also in a group feels at ease.
A school as an urban microcosm, blending learning with nature for total well-being.
Each pupil must be able to integrate into the educational experience it offers, so that he or she is recognised and acknowledged as an active member of the school community, and involved in the activities that take place there.
The space of the school complex is thus conceived as an urban microcosm within a natural system. The classrooms, although properly screened, are in direct contact with the surrounding nature of the lot and enjoy extensive views of the surroundings of the lot, which at this point becomes a space/park. Environmental comfort is thus ensured not only in terms of temperature but also in terms of visibility and enjoyment of being in direct contact with a park.
Reuse
The space is also designed with the times in mind, to encourage relations between pupils and educators, between all staff and parents, so that the well-being of the adults working in these schools is ensured so that the project as a whole has value. The courtyard typology, with several staggered levels, reinforces a relationship with the external environment: the internal atrium, through visual continuity from the different floors, is in fact intended to be an extension of the entrance square, where the various educational activities also take place.
The articulation of the open spaces makes it possible to identify urban places integrated with the school building: the entrance square, the surrounding garden.
The school building is structured through the repetition of basic blocks/units that accommodate various types of classrooms and flexible spaces that, thanks to large windows and movable panelling, can be modified as required.
The alternation and relationship between inside and outside is the assumption that accommodates the plurality of the educational experience. The project nullifies the idea of the corridor and modifies the distribution system, transforming it into a space of mediation with the classroom where active student involvement and exploration, cooperative bonds and “being at school” are encouraged.
Particular attention has been paid to the theme of natural light: each classroom or work or break space is lit both directly and indirectly.
The chromatic theme of the environment is also important for the orientation and use of spaces: the classrooms, painted white on the inside, are identifiable from the outside through differentiated and progressive colours between class levels. This solution contributes, with the external colours of the vegetation and its varied polychromy in the different seasons, to a total quality of the environment in the educational moment.
