The redevelopment project of the Monumental Port of Naples extends from the San Vincenzo Pier to the Immacolatella Vecchia Pier and intervenes on the interface area between the port and the ancient city, developing a complex urban project capable of connecting different parts of the waterfront.
Tying the long perimeter of the port area of Naples to the monumental centre of the city, the intervention envisages the creation of a soil system called filtering line. This transforms separation into exchange and correlation between urban and port resources, imagining a strong link between the city’s notable places and the different functional parts of the port, envisaging the creation of a linear system of public green areas with pedestrian and bicycle paths.

The filtering line reorganises mobility flows by separating urban and port flows; it provides pedestrian routes and junctions between the city and the port; it rationalises the port’s access points; it realises service facilities, multi-purpose buildings, underground car parks and transforms the port’s boundary into a great resource for the city. The system is realised through a land conformation that incorporates urban and port activities in its variable section, keeping them distinct.
The project was realised in the area of the Beverello Pier, where the complex is transformed into a ground system, no longer hypogeous, where at the quay level, tourist and service facilities are allocated, while at the upper level the system is transformed into a large panoramic promenade-viewpoint. At night the entire arch of the filtering line becomes a great luminous sign, an urban luminance, a new icon of contemporary Naples.
Sensitive Limits
The urban and architectural choices adopted in the drafting of the Molo Beverello have followed both ‘transport’ and ‘urban’ criteria.
From the point of view of from a transport point of view, the aim was to improve traffic flows and ground services for passengers (approximately 10 million passengers (approximately 10 million passengers are expected each year), i.e. the users of the transport system for the Gulf Islands; from the urban point of view, the desire was to combine functional and public needs; therefore, the construction of a path/pathway on the roof of the Terminal, which could become a new promenade for the city, which does not exist today, while at the same time using the docks for port activities, reserved for the movement of passengers and vehicles connected to the shipping lines.
