St. Benedict’s Market is a symbolic and vital place that represents a solid centrality for the district of the same name. Imposing in its bulk and for the dominating position it occupies at the highest point of the neighborhood, the building was constructed in 1957 to replace the Largo Civic Market, which was demolished to make way for a more modern structure.

The market is located in the district of San Benedetto, situated in the eastern part of Cagliari, which assumed, following the city’s expansion process, its current polygonal shape, with its center in the square of the same name and vertices corresponding to other central points of the city.

A new meeting point opens up in the heart of the city, where the market becomes a crossroads of encounters and exchanges, an open place that pulses with life and connects the community in a collective system.

The proposal for the redevelopment of the San Benedetto market, which aims to reconfigure the functional layout of the building and enhance its usability, extends to the reorganization plan of its adjacencies with the aim of improving the urban design, reorganizing the external portions to restore decorum and order to the whole, and offering citizens new spaces that allow a more modern use of the civic market. The project aims to transform the Market into a multipurpose space, flexible and adaptable to accommodate other activities in addition to the commercial one, proposing itself as a new point of aggregation open to the city, trying to cover almost all the hours of the day, providing, also activities related to the local tradition with tourist-culinary declination of the place.

Reuse

The project proposed a completely renewed urban space in relation to the building both for the transformation of the surrounding area into a welcoming square that invites to stop and meet, and for the breath that the volume assumes with the liberation from the strong backfills and the alignment of the prominence of the elevations to the overlooking elevation on Via Pacinotti. The square carved out thanks to the modeling of the land is articulated in a flat area surrounding the building connected to Via Bacaredda by a soft staircase that places it sheltered from the intense vehicular traffic of the high-speed road, overlooked by the entrances to the Market and the stores at the foot of the tall buildings on Via Pacinotti, now connected in level with the Market area.

On the longitudinal sides, the height difference is resolved with a delicate terrain modeling that invites the entrance to the Market and interprets it as a crossing element and connection between the two commercial streets Tiziano and Cocco Ortu. In reconfiguring the existing building, whose image is strongly rooted in the heritage traditional urban fabric, energetically consolidated on the figurative level, it is decisive the preservation of the material and chromatic characters of the external envelope. As well as it was considered effective to create a relationship of authentic distinction and recognizability of the affixations and additions so that these innovative elements would be identifiable as enhancements of aesthetic potential.

The freeing of the existing volume from the encumbrance of the land that currently covers the ground floor, as well as allowing the surrounding area to be remodelled, creating spaces and paths for a new way of frequenting the square, has restored full accessibility to the Market.

From the patio, the green heart of the new configuration, depart the main paths of the distribution on the floor and those connecting the levels of the market. Floor and those connecting with the upper levels: a convenient ramp around the void leads to the terrace, like a long promenade. The roof terrace, accessed by both the large patio ramp and the lift, will house two spacious volumes for catering, leaving the perimeter views completely free.
