This project focuses on the redevelopment and change of use of the floor premises reserved for services in the public residential housing building known as “Il Corviale” on the outskirts of Rome.
Originally designed by architect Fiorentino, the “free floor” was intended to house services of public interest, which were never realized. As a result, ten years after the building’s construction, this floor was illegally occupied. Revamping the free surface of “Il Corviale” required finding new, shared, and innovative ways of dwelling.
Shared use, eco-sustainable and economical, public extension of the lodgings, a space to share and care for together.
The free floor becomes a "positive" interruption in the lives of residents and the building's "green backbone.
On-site surveys revealed a strong sense of community, with forms of neighborliness integral to dwelling, largely due to private spaces being made public through self-organization.
This unique typological novelty became a positive element in the new project. The dwelling typologies were integrated within the existing structural grid, interspersed with public living spaces that act as extensions of the apartments—areas to share and maintain collectively.
Reuse
The distributive improvements to the lodgings are part of an experimental program focused on creating shared, environmentally, and economically sustainable environments. The free floor thus becomes a “positive” interruption in residents’ lives, forming the building’s “green backbone.”
The project’s façade study preserves the free floor as a point of interruption in the building’s linearity, aiming to enhance well-being inside by providing shade in the summer and insulation in the winter.
The recognizability of the horizontal axis on the fourth floor, originally designed by Fiorentino, will continue to be reinterpreted through this project, emphasizing its “green plan” theme. This concept is reflected in the green hues visible from the floor’s protruding parts, making nature a central theme of the public floor.
Ultimately, this project reimagines Fiorentino’s free plan concept in an innovative and contemporary way.
