The magic lantern.
A signal that tells Foligno of its rebirth.

The building of the former church of the Annunziata in Foligno has never had life until the reuse project that now sees it converted into the Museum of Contemporary Art. The church, designed around 1765 by the architect Murena, was never finished and many were the improper uses, until the complete abandonment and degradation caused both by the demolition of a wing of the church in 1980, and the earthquake of 1997. The plan recalls an excavated architecture, consisting of an elongated main room, dominated by a large masonry dome and a walkway that surrounds the classroom allowing views of the main environment and the dome. The building is configured as a “construction site” of the ‘700 that tells his memory, the construction techniques of the time and the spatiality of its original structure.

The enhancement of this space is the action behind the project of reuse and transformation of the former Church in the Museum. The introduction of new elements, able to give life and new meanings to the Fabrica, it becomes functional to this idea, solving both the structural problem of the building – with the need for restoration and seismic improvement – both of functional transformation to the new use of the complex. A new volume reinterprets the original shape, thus completing the annular walking on the first floor, with a role of completion of the wall box. Consisting of a metal structure, is placed on steel struts and covered with a corten metal shell, perforated to reproduce an irregular design, which reinterprets the texture of the bricks in a contemporary way and creates an unexpected play of light.
The new volume, during the night hours, becomes a real “magic lantern” representing a signal that tells Foligno his rebirth. To make this new life possible other elements that, functional to the static improvement, are an opportunity to insert elements of contemporary architecture: a new iron dome that consolidates and supports the original; iron profiles that support the openings of the walker on the main classroom; trusses of iron and wood that replace the previous ones for the classroom; a walkway that, connecting the two parts of the factory to the first floor, becomes an element of integration between the ancient and the new vantage point of the entire space and the imposing sculpture “Calamita Cosmica” by Gino De Dominicis in the main hall.
