Like secular cathedrals, postal buildings have always played a crucial role in cities.

The "Progetto Polis" aims to bring some of the iconic buildings of Poste Italiane, which have characterized 20th-century Italian architecture and design, back to the heart of the city. This will be achieved by creating new coworking spaces through the conversion of certain areas within the extensive heritage of Poste Italiane.

La fabbrica dell’innovazione. Dialogo, rispetto e riattivazione della grande tradizione moderna dei palazzi postali italiani

The project involves architectural works by prominent 20th-century figures, such as the building in Naples by Giuseppe Vaccaro; those in La Spezia and Palermo by Angiolo Mazzoni; in Rome by Armando Titta; in Milan – Cordusio by Paolo Cesa Bianchi and Ferrino Giannini; and in San Felice al Circeo by Pierluigi Spadolini. It combines Poste Italiane’s need to create a new design with identifying elements of shared coworking spaces across the peninsula (the entrance portal, the reception area, the conference wall, and the shared table) and the significant spatiality of these buildings, characterized by important artistic features and emblematic furnishings that represent the history of design.

Each coworking space is designed for equitable and universal use, adapting to the diverse abilities of all users through a simple and intuitive design that eliminates any existing barriers. This approach enhances the usability of architecturally significant spaces, often inaccessible to the public, without altering the buildings' image. It preserves their original character while maintaining the stylistic peculiarities of each structure. The theme of spatial configuration flexibility not only ensures accessibility for all but also allows for entirely reversible interventions, guaranteeing the restoration of the premises to their current state if needed.
