A new visitor route to explore the archaeological site in the heart of Rome
Starting from 12 July 2025, the new visitor route “Crypta Balbi: Open Site” invites the public to enter the heart of the archaeological excavation and restoration works currently underway at the Crypta Balbi, one of the sites of the National Roman Museum.
Un’occasione straordinaria per osservare da vicino i lavori in corso in uno dei luoghi più emblematici della stratificazione urbana di Roma, chiuso al pubblico dal gennaio 2023 per consentire lo svolgimento di un articolato piano di valorizzazione.
The architectural project, designed by Tstudio, aims to return the entire site to the city as a multifunctional and accessible cultural system, where ancient material becomes ruin and the Crypta reconnects with contemporary Rome. It is a work conceived to protect, narrate and make accessible the site’s historical complexity, with an architectural language that is clearly contemporary, respectful and non-invasive.
“Open Site” is also an opportunity to engage the public in the delicate process of conservation, offering a behind-the-scenes view of an evolving cultural heritage.
Guided tours take place every Saturday at 10:30 and 12:00
