The restoration project of the Colombaia Castle, in addition to works of particular historical and architectural value, concerns an urban area, the island of Colombaia, characterized by a strong landscape quality given by the specific geographical location that makes it unique in the Mediterranean. A privileged viewpoint towards the historic city of Trapani, an enchanting angle towards a territory drawn by the salt pans and a belvedere facing the Egadi Islands, the Colombaia castle is an important landmark of the western tip of Sicily that distinguishes the landscape, becoming one of the most important symbols of the city.

History and modernity overlook the Sicilian sea

In fact, for those who travel the coastline in whose inlet the port is carved, the castle and, by reflection, the entire island are a reference capable of orienting, the background of any view of the historic city to the south and west. The project that affects the island includes interventions designed not only to strengthen the symbolic value it takes within the Trapani scenario but is also aimed at not making it considered only a scenic backdrop and is therefore aimed at making it usable to citizens, offering a new public space to the city and allowing the entrance to the castle and the shed through the attribution of a new use. In addition to the functional issue of creating a museum and a place for receptive activities inside the Colombaia castle and in the shed adjacent to it, the project seeks to pursue a number of general objectives concerning the rethinking of the entire island.

The restoration work will therefore be aimed at suggesting a use of the castle that does not distort the spatiality of the rooms that comprise it. Likewise, the image of the shed, however irretrievable, must be preserved since it is sedimented in the collective memory.

. In this regard, therefore, the hotel use chosen for this building, although included in an entirely new construction, will still have to adapt to the volumetry that will evoke the former shed and the conformation of the spaces that characterized it.
