TITLE
Redevelopment and enhancement of archaeological area Crypta Balbi
CLIENT
Museo Nazionale Romano
TYPE OF INTERVENTION
Restoration and reuse
SURFACE
9.000 mq
STATE
In progress
The aim of the project was to recover the entire site as an articulated and multifunctional cultural system open to the city, returning the Crypta Balbi area to its historical and urban value.
The property once again becomes a collective place where the ancient returns to the new, matter becomes ruins and the Crypta meets Rome again.
Making this piece of the ancient city public means acting considering the theme of conservation of the individual chronologically connoted layers; protecting the individual artefacts; making the entire archaeological structure usable in a safe manner; realising a clearly contemporary and recognisable work that respects the ancient and is not invasive. The entire Crypta Balbi complex is characterised by a natural chronological stratification, suggesting a work by layers that intersect and overlap, interpreting and restoring the historical complexity of the site.
The ancient returns to the new, matter becomes ruins and the Crypta meets Rome again.
The idea of a link with the urban is embodied in a design action that recovers the chronological stratifications by distinguishing a pathway from the Roman period and a Renaissance one (physically coinciding with the contemporary level).
The public route, is characterised by covered and open areas that can be accessed from all four streets that delimit the block in which the Crypta is inserted: Via delle Botteghe Oscure; Via Michelangelo Caetani; Via dei Delfini; Via dei Polacchi.
The public spaces are characterised by a covered part configured as a Renaissance square and a walkway that forms a narrative path to admire and understand the archaeological excavations from above.
The multiplication of accesses to the area makes it possible to determine the layouts (longitudinal and transversal) to which correspond different narrative and experiential planes that make the visit a narrative.
The narration allows an easy understanding of the space also for people with different abilities, providing a series of tactile elements and multimedia supports that allow everyone to deepen their knowledge of the space.
The walkway becomes a museum itinerary itself: it tells the history of the place, it frames specific points of the archaeological structure; it showcases remains and original objects; it is equipped with specific viewpoints and stops. It therefore helps in the readability of the asset by equipping itself with specific knowledge devices that consist of pavement changes, careful lighting design, the inclusion of multimedia and interactive supports, multilingual information panels and written in Braille alphabet.
The route has portions that narrate the historical evolution that led to the current conformation of the Crypta through the modifications that have occurred throughout history. This narrative, accompanied by various descriptive devices, develops with moments of pause and appreciation of the ‘museum objects’ that gradually reveal themselves during the visit.
