The property intended to house the new University Campus was part of the area located in the Municipality of Latina in a former military compound of the fascist era called Ex-Functional Barracks and later became a refugee camp. The complex was in disuse and a transformation intervention was implemented on it, capable of achieving adequate conditions of fruitive and environmental quality, oriented to the creation of housing and services related to the needs of university students.
The intervention was configured as an important opportunity to enhance the value of a place that had lost defined urban identity characters over time, but which has a high historical-documental value. For the context in which it is located and for its positional value, it was in fact a relevant redevelopment initiative at the urban scale of the City of Latina, pursued through an enhancement of morphological quality and the inclusion of strategic functions.
Urban-scale redevelopment of the City of Latina by enhancing its morphological quality and the inclusion of strategic functions.
Particular attention was paid to integrating architectural and energy-saving aspects,
combining sustainability, technological innovation with the enhancement of connective spaces according to bioclimatic criteria.
Combined design strategies led to the re-functionalization of an urban area according to complex functional mixes that allowed for the preservation of residential use while inserting a new centrality; the establishment of a building body that could best meet the prefigured functional, economic and management objectives; and the reconfiguration of open spaces and the creation of permeable green equipped areas.
Restoration
The design of the residential building was aimed at limiting excessive compartmentalization of functions, seeking to integrate cultural and educational services and recreational and support services into the building intended for housing. While preserving the area to be used for residential functions, the design focused on the integration of individual and collective spaces, endowing the complex with private, semi-private, semi-collective, and collective environments.
The design of the service building was aimed at equipping the student residence with the necessary spaces for socialization, recreation, study and relaxation and includes not only recreational services but also cultural and educational services for the non-institutional personal training that the student completes on an individual or group basis even outside his or her private or semi-private residential setting.
With a view to endowing the building with an optimal internal distribution, a scheme derived from the structure of the building itself, which has a full-height central hall and two side wings, was adopted. Among the design objectives was the environmental and landscape redevelopment of the area.
The arrangement of the outdoor space generated an opportunity to experience outdoors some activities related to leisure, cultural activities, recreation and sports. For this reason, the park, equipped with outdoor lighting and accompanying signage to the buildings of residences and services and to the equipped areas, houses within it several functional areas such as green and recreational areas.
